Singapore Fashion Week: My thoughts on the Diane von Furstenberg talk

by CARMEN. _DSC2421 copy

Fashion goddess. Fashion Icon. Fashion Revolutionary.  These are some of the words used to describe Diane von Furstenberg. Last week I was invited to hear the inspirational story of the woman behind the iconic wrap dress, held at the futuristic glass-walled Lasalle College of the Arts Campus. This series of “fashion talks” marked the kick off to (insert name of non existent car sponsor here…wait what goodbye Audi??!!!) Singapore Fashion Week, and we will give you our thoughts about the shows in another post.

Some facts you may not known about DVF : Diane was born to Jewish parents and was born in Belgium. Her mother survived Auschwitz concentration camp. Later in life, Diane was a real princess when she married into German royalty, although has since lost the “Princess” title after divorcing her husband. Her influence on women’s fashion is so profound that she even has some designs showcased at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Diane shared how in her early 20’s, she landed in the U.S. with a suitcase of five dresses she had made in Italy from Jersey cloth (as she considered this fabric to be most flattering for women but also made you feel a million bucks when wearing it) . DvF managed to secure an appointment with the well known socialite editor of Vogue, Diana Vreeland – an advocate of celebrating uniqueness. Vreeland loved DVF’s simple style and elegance and this set the stage for the remarkable growth and success of DVF. Within six years of entering the fashion world in 1970, Diane had created a fashion frenzy and was selling 25,000 dresses a week. The journey of the dress sees the brand now in over 70 countries and enjoys worldwide recognition.

il_570xN.536973982_3wnn
Some of the first DvF dresses above.. Did you know it’s the 40th anniversary for the wrap dress?!

Fun fact: Natasha accepted an invitation to visit the flagship boutique in the Meatpacker’s District in Manhattan and is often seen wearing a DVF wrap out and about in Singapore. It’s getting a bit too hot for me to do the same in Hong Kong, but I do love my DvF dresses and think they are perfect when indoors and the air-con has been working in overdrive.

Diane has become quite the philanthropist and takes pride in inspiring young women in the industry to succeed. One of her mantra’s that she mentioned at the talk was “your only regret in life should be not doing the things you want to”. WOW. On a personal level that really spoke to me, as after leaving corporate world to start up my own business “Survive Asia“, I do have days where I wonder whether it would have been easier to stay in my previous line of work with all its security and benefits. But then i hear those words from DvF’s and I realise that i WOULD have regretted not trying, so it made my heart skip a beat. And during the talk I sat next to other inspiring entrepreneurial women in Singapore who have also taken a leap of faith, and we were all moved by this. It was also inspiring to see that via the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), Diane and other designers who have “made it” are able to mentor the new generation of designers coming on board – it’s what she now refers to as the “legacy” stage in her career.

Another positive note from the talk: Diane mentioned her latest “muse” is women who are comfortable with themselves in their own skin (now we’re talking, if only all designers in the industry thought like this!).

_DSC2440

After the talk (the lecture hall was packed with not one seat left), there was some classic  “mingling” with fashion folk in the courtyard of La Salle, and I managed to chat to gorgeous Brittany Hampton, the winner of the E! show “House of DVF” and Ambassador for the DVF brand.

_DSC2450Brittany already has her own designs in Nordstrom stores throughout the US and in DVF stores. She also styles celebs in Hollywood including Ariana Grande and Jaden Smith!

Overall the reception from the DvF talk was very positive – the crowd were pumped after her inspiring talk and it was great to see a positive side of the industry that was supportive, inclusive and celebrating women everywhere  (because let’s face it, the fashion industry can feel anything but the above sometimes!).

CHIC(K) FESTIVAL FASHION at Clockenflap

It was Carmen’s first time at Clockenflap (THE music festival in Hong Kong) – and what a heady one it was! A myriad of music, art, fashion, food, and did anyone else see the robots that danced to the UK TV theme show The Apprentice? I bet some of those robots are more clever than some of the contestants… but moving on.

The focus of this blog is more tilted towards fashion, so let’s talk about that. The overwhelming theme of festival fashion is flannel shirts and Clockenflap this year did not disappoint… HOWEVER there were some people that really went all out with their fashion, and here are the faves;

BeFunky_null_4.jpg BeFunky_IMG_1312.jpg BeFunky_null_1.jpg BeFunky_null_122.jpg BeFunky_null_126.jpg BeFunky_IMG_1328.jpg BeFunky_IMG_1333.jpg

BeFunky_null_17.jpg

Fashion stalls were also rocking on the day.

Probably the coolest t-shirt of all time below.

BeFunky_null_2.jpg

And then the coolest shoes! These were hand drawn and limited edition of Nike Air’s – Carmen’s absolute favourite fashion pick.
BeFunky_null_29.jpg

You could also get fresh flower hairbands at the festival where they mixed real and fake flowers to create creative headpieces! BeFunky_null_94.jpg

An ingenious fashion accessory below – these garters contain sneaky pockets to stash your valuables which are great for those who travel, go clubbing or are festival goers and just wanna dance freely!
BeFunky_IMG_1301.jpgSuper lightweight (and funky) sunglasses:

What did Carmen wear? Well she changed THREE TIMES in the morning thanks to the weather being all cray cray (it went from sunny to cloudy to argh nooo it’s not going to rain is it or is it?!)

First outfit change:
BeFunky_null_1332.jpg

Second outfit change – more boho chic:BeFunky_null_389.jpg

Final outfit selected (because it was definitely going to rain): jeans are from C.Wonder, tee from Bangkok and sneaks are McQueen for Puma.

Singapore’s fashion scene just got better with the opening of Roberto Cavalli Boutique in Marina Bay Sands!

We were super excited when we heard the news that the Italian designer Roberto Cavalli is opening a boutique in Singapore’s The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands! We were even more excited when we got an invitation to attend the boutique opening and a preview of Cavalli’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection. Again, Natasha had to fly solo because Carmen is attending London Fashion Week tomorrow. Yay!!

IMG_1152.PNG

Cavalli’s designes have always been on the va-va-voom and flamboyant side, which is why Sofia Vergara wears a lot of his designs, because she herself is va-va-voom! This season, we REALLY like what we saw. Very Great Gatsby, 1920s silhouette, a lot of beading and lace, satin and silk, a bit of mink in all the right places, with a dash of Cavalli’s signature glamorous and sexy touch. Amazing play of textures and patterns, and every clothes Natasha saw on the runway were so breathtakingly beautiful.

So, enough writing and time to share the pics that Natasha took at the event. She made sure to stand strategically, so she could also take pictures of the (very friendly and pretty) models backstage. Natasha loved the flame constantly ‘burning’ on all four panels of the plasma TV, which played very well with some of the dresses with the flame-like pattern.

Now do you believe us when we say they’re all breathtaking??!!

Natasha managed to snap a picture between the models after the show. Thank God she wore her 12 cm Jimmy Choos, because the models were so damn tall! Even then she felt like a shorty among them 🙂

IMG_1153-0.PNGHere’s a picture of the female models – don’t you just love the handsome photo bomber in the background?

After the show was over, Natasha had a wander around the brandspanking new boutique and snapped a few photos of some of the gorgeous things she saw.

Pact @ Orchard Central: We are officially obsessed!

We’ve done it again – found the new kid in town, and now visit there almost 3 times a week… Pact is a concept store that features three parts: an awesome restaurant (Kilo); shop (K.I.N) and get your haircut (+LIM)! How convenient to have all three (and all done to an incredibly high standard) – all in one place! We think this new area rocks, the service is friendly, efficient and well informed; the food (try the bowls during brunch/lunch) is well priced and delicious; the shopping showcases brands and products that are not found anywhere else in Singapore (and includes lightweight bamboo clothing for women and men – perfect for the humidity here).

Here are some photos of the store below…

There is also a “hidden” mani/pedi salon next to the Code Deco store -check it out! Note they only do gelish.IMG_7971.JPG

Carmen & Natasha: The daily look

Natasha’s look: soft beige tones which goes amazingly well with snake print shoes and white cut offs!!

BeFunky_IMG_2221b.jpgCarmen’s look: again beige tones with the skirt but this time accentuated with black and gold. BeFunky_IMG_2220b.jpgThe common “accessory” spotted in both pics above? COFFEE CUPS!!!!!

Window shopping: Mulberry

It’s great to window shop in SG – especially with the super expensive brands.

Here is a sneaky peak at what’s in store at Mulberry right now….

Screen Shot 2014-04-16 at 3.22.08 PM

We love everything in this pic. The white clutch bottom right, the orange handbag (which looks super classy and the scarf! Oh the scarf!), and of course, the summery chic dress which Carmen and Natasha will be dreaming about for months… sigh.

We love how Mulberry has been super clever with this display – showing us different ways to mix and match their merchandise. Devastatingly clever, as now we would like the lot.

You hear that Mulberry? Carmen and Natasha have eyes on you….

Colour me crazy at Ferragamo!

Oh my god. Carmen walked past one of the many Ferragamo stores in SG on the weekend and was stopped in her tracks.

Beautiful bright colours everywhere!

Check it out below – all spotted in the Isetan Orchard store. It’s like a candy store for women!

We are loving the hot pink, aqua/qreen, turquoise and royal blue colours! Oh wait… Is that most of them?!!

The Kenzo shoes above are retailing at around $700sgd.

We have also heard on the grapevine that the original Robinsons located at Centrepoint are holding a massive closing down sale – so Carmen and Natasha may just have to head on down to grab some bargains!

Pop up at People’s Park Complex – Edible Gardens, Naiise and Haystakt

We love how many pop ups are… well… popping up… in Singapore.

Carmen found out about an awesome popup currently running on a rooftop in the middle of Chinatown – People’s Park Complex to be precise, and had to check it out!

Edible gardens (one of the first to introduce urban agriculture to Singapore!) is keen to promote the concept of urban farming, and to start of 2014 they decided to reach out to the public via a pop up store, teaming up with a couple of awesome local online retailers to help spread the word. Eventually by the end of May they will be using the space to create one of the LARGEST URBAN GARDENS in ASIA!!! How exciting is that?

The online retailers they have teamed up with are:

Naiise: (www.naiise.com)  stocks a range of furniture and interesting gifts – if you are looking for unique finds then this is a great place to start.

Haystakt (www.haystakt.com) features local makers and their crafts. We think it’s so awesome that this firm is supporting local artists!

Here are some pics of the pop up space, open until the end of the month.

BeFunkssy_null_3.jpg

Loving these prints below. Can you believe they are actually real photographs (not illustrations)!

BeFunky_null_3d.jpgBeFunky_IMG_1301.jpg

BeFunky_null_2dd.jpg

Seriously, Carmen could easily have bought everything in this photo below, from the manmade shelf ladder to the little watering can and those blank notebooks on the right were also gorgeous! BeFunky_IMG_1309.jpg

Fun tote bags below! From memory around $20sgd. BeFunky_IMG_1313b.jpg

Loving the Naiise sign spotted in the pop up below! BeFunky_IMG_1315.jpgThese napkins below were so awesome – love them! $10sgd each pack.BeFunky_null_2b.jpg

All the below items are made using RICE HUSK. No plastic at all – isn’t that amazeballs?! They are all microwaveable too and we can imagine they are a lot safer then heating up that plastic tupperware. Love the coffee cup too… Oh and as you can see in the far right corner, they had those fun stripey straws too which we love for parties! BeFunky_null_2d.jpg

Wooden iphone covers anyone? These age naturally over the years – which we think is pretty cool (as long as Apple doesn’t change the size of the phone anytime soon!).BeFunky_null_2e.jpg

So many fun knick knacks can be found at this pop up! BeFunky_null_2ss.jpg

BeFunky_null_5.jpg

Fun tablewares can also be found! BeFunky_null_e5.jpg

Now here is something Carmen considered as one of the highlights. They had created “living” table decorations – as you can see by the below placemats (YES they are real!!)! Having said that, they are really only meant to be hung on the wall – which in itself is so cool! Apparently they are some type of mossy plant – and they smell amazing! BeFunky_null_3gree.jpg

You can see one hung up in the below picture on the left. How gorgeous is the living wall?! So great to see such creative home decor in Singapore! BeFunky_null_3sdr.jpg

And when you venture outside, you can find the beginning of the massive roof garden Edible Gardens are planning to create! BeFunky_IMG_1319.jpg BeFunky_IMG_13218.jpg

Mulberry in Singapore

BeFunky_IMG_0439.jpg

BIG fans of Mulberry… Ok we know it’s designer and not in everybody’s budget, but in London this brand is so ubiquitous. And… the quality is awesome. So let’s have a look at what’s in the Mulberry store at the Mandarin Gallery.

Spotlight on Shopping in Seminyak, Bali

IMG_2969

So here’s the best part about living in Singapore – going to a tropical island such as Bali is only a short plane ride away. For those of you who have not been there, if you think Bali is a small island – you’re wrong! It’s huge and it has so many faces to it and this beautiful island has practically everything for everyone – including fashion aficionados like Carmen and Natasha. This post puts the focus on one area only – Seminyak – where all the restaurants, cute little cafes, and shops are located. Natasha was there for six days recently and started snapping away so our lovely readers (yes, YOU) know where to go if ever you happen to be in the Seminyak area. When we say Seminyak, we meant specifically Oberoi Road and Legian Road, where most of the gorgeous shops are on.

First stop: Magali Pascal, Natasha’s favorite shop. Magali is a Bali-based French designer and always uses the yummiest and awesome quality fabric of mostly lace, silk and the softest cotton (trust me, these are all essential fabric to wear in Bali’s notorious heat). Price is a bit steep for Bali standards (SGD80-300) but trust us it’s worth it!

IMG_2854IMG_2859

Natasha adores these two colors in this season’s collection. the canary yellow and mint green is perfect against the island’s sunset or beach backdrop.

IMG_2861 IMG_2863

She also makes gorgeous jewelry – very delicate and feminine design. We must exercise our willpower and restrain ourselves whenever we go to her store! Oh, Magali Pascal has a few stores in the Seminyak area, so if you you see something you like and they don’t have your size or item – don’t fret, chances are they’ll have it in their other shop!

IMG_2862 IMG_2858

IMG_2856

After Natasha regained her composure, it’s time to walk a few meters down the road to pop into Lulu Yasmine, another beautiful boutique on Oberoi Street. Admittedly, the choices are a tad bit limited, but they do have a few key pieces that are too good to put back on the rack. If we had to choose, we’ll definitely go for Magali Pascal!

IMG_2867 IMG_2868

We’re loving the chandelier! It would go so well in our walk-in wardrobe. Sigh – dream on Carmen and Natasha!

IMG_2869

Literally next to Lulu Yasmine, there’s another shop called ‘from’.Trust us, in Bali’s tropical heat, going into shops to cool yourself down is one of the best things to do! From has casual slouchy t-shirts for men and women, and funky dresses, sunglasses and jewelry. Price is reasonable and the fabric does tend to stretch and lose a bit of shape after a dozen washes or so (speaking of experience).IMG_2873 IMG_2875  IMG_2876

Natasha loves the red dress on the rack! The fabric is so soft and perfect for Bali and Singapore! And the red is so vibrant. Pair it with nude flats or cute strappy sandals, plus a fedora hat. Gorgeous! IMG_2880  IMG_2878

Seminyak Square – About 500 meters down the road from Lulu Yasmine, lies Seminyak Square – which is like a mini mall with cafes and restaurants (there’s a good salon upstairs on level 2 by the way, called jazB owned by a Singaporean lady, it’s worth checking it out if you’ve had enough of walking around!). Seminyak Square has a daily bazaar of 10-15 stalls, with each stall selling things like dresses and jewelry. Natasha found a couple of maxi dresses for SGD50 and the best part? You can show off your bargaining skills (which Carmen and Natasha are not very good at).IMG_3068 IMG_3069

IMG_3070

There’s a small road next to Seminyak Square – and beware of guys in batik shirts trying to offer you ‘vouchers’ – be polite but decline them sternly or just say ‘no, thanks’ and walk away. Anyway, back to the topic of cute stores, there’s a gorgeous new shop called House of Feathers. Do yourself a favor and go in the shop! Word of warning for those of you who are obsessed with jewelry, the shop has a lot of cute things. We repeat, a lot! Pricewise, it won’t send you broke but it’s not dirt cheap either. They’re about SGD30-SGD50 each and all so cute! Bali designers do friendship bracelets really well, and Natasha is obsessed with stacking them.

IMG_3095

IMG_3082

IMG_3105

We love the dove bracelet! They are SGD30 each. Natasha bought the pink one and the mint green four-leaf clover bracelet.

IMG_3083 IMG_3084

The necklaces are equally gorgeous! the pom pom ones and neon tassels are so cute. They’re about SGD50-70 each. While writing this blog, we’re thinking – why didn’t we get those?! Oh well, there’s always next time.

IMG_3085 IMG_3086

The necklaces below are Natasha’s favorite! Very Proenza Schoeler and Prabal Gurung, don’t you think? Perfect for white t-shirt and jeans ensemble.IMG_3087

House of Feathers has really beautiful tote bags as well – perfect for the beach! The colors are so vibrant and vivid, and have a Tibetan/Burmese feel to it. They’re SGD70 each and we think it’s worth it. IMG_3093  IMG_3091

The shop sells clothes and other knick knacks, but Natasha was too fascinated with the jewelry and accessories  that she didn’t really bother looking at the dresses. Make sure you go to this shop, it’s worth the stop!     IMG_3094

Happy New Year! Bring on 2013!

We really hope all of our readers had a great Christmas and Happy New Year!
We know we have been on a major break, but must admit we can’t wait to get blogging again!

Watch this space for new postings soon and in even more exciting news, we have some amazing giveaways coming up! Who doesn’t love getting fashionable stuff for free?!

Accessories – The Scarf

This post was so cool and inspirational, we had to let our readers know about this! Obviously in Singapore the requirement for scarves would seem scarce, however if you have been to a cinema here or walked inside a mall for more than 5 minutes, you’ll know that the air-conditioning can be FIERCE here. Therefore, we think the above tutorial by Wendy Nguyen could come in handy to ensure you look fashionably chic whilst walking around indoors!
Carmen & Natasha xx

Pandas in Singapore…

Ok so we know it isn’t “fashion”… but Carmen was lucky enough to score a preview of the two pandas (Kai Kai and Jia Jia) who have recently arrived in Singapore from Chengdu, and seriously… who doesn’t love pandas?? So we just had to show our readers a few pics!

Think of it as simply more “black and white” inspiration….and we have included some panda inspired accessories at the bottom of the post!

The pandas now reside at the River Safari (within the Singapore zoo) and will be open to the public in December.

Here is Kai Kai (the male panda) – the whole time he pretty much moped around and liked to show his bottom a lot! Very cute – he looks quite small here but as soon as he starts walking around it is like he expands twice in size – he has a very elongated body!

And here is the “diva-esque” Jia Jia – she likes to put on a show and was very entertaining to watch! She was such a little poser!

And here is Carmen with Jia Jia in the background!

They keep the pandas in separate enclosures for breeding purposes, but both enclosures link up via tunnels. It’s amazing how close you feel to the pandas – it’s an open air enclosure so there is no glass between you and the animals! It’s also air-conditioned inside (I guess the pandas couldn’t handle Singapore humidity) so it’s all very pleasant.

And here is a red panda which was also hanging out in the enclosure (reminds us of Master Shifu from Kung Fu Panda!)

And here are some panda- inspired accessories! Click on the image for further details.

Liebster blog award!

We’re really excited to have received the Liebster blog award from Tall Totty at talltotty.wordpress.com

Clothes from Salad Shop, Haji Lane

Here are some of the clothes at Salad shop – there seems to be quite a botanical theme here!!

Awesome floral top in MUSTARD. Still can’t get enough of this colour! Priced at SGD79.

Simple white dress and the fabric felt great… priced at SGD139

Love this botanical skirt! Very comfy and stretchy, and looks more expensive then it is (can a girl ask for more from fashion?!). Priced at SGD89

We like the animal print on this top below, mainly because the print is a bit more subtle, with hints of teal and pink running through the top. We would recommend chunky accessories to go with it however for the younger ladies, to stop it looking too auntie-ish! Price: SGD69

In Singapore we must admit we need a huge stock of dresses like the ones below (which reminds us of tree trunks!)…flowy enough for your skin to breathe in this crazy hot place, but with a bit of shape so you don’t look like a potato sack. Yes please. And you can change it up a bit just be wearing a different colour belt – we like the idea of wearing a white belt one day, and neon yellow the next for this dress!  Priced at SGD89

Cute little pattern, a Jurong bird park dress perhaps! Priced at SGD139

More from Lauren Jasmine in Singapore

We recently visited Singaporean brand Lauren Jasmine (click here to visit previous blog post).

Check out some of our favourite looks below – and yes you can purchase online in Singapore! For details on pricing click on the image. We especially love the black dress bottom right – a classic design with a twist!
